Continuing our look at my meditations and research into the nature of the Gods I thought it would be a good idea to continue with a look at the idea of communication. I thought we would look at this next mostly due to one of the questions asked after the last post. I was asked for an example of the Gods asking for something. So it seems logical to continue with a look at communication.
Communication with the Gods can be a lot like this. I am convinced the Gods don’t speak English or Spanish or in fact whatever languages you are speaking in, this just don’t get it or they choose not to get it. Yet they do seem to want to communicate with us. I know some people who are especially gifted with the second site or some other super skill and they have a much more direct two way communication with the Gods, but for the rest of us it is all a bit vague and it does require some effort on our part.
Prayer is the first and easiest way of communication. I am finding as time goes on the words are not so important. In fact the words are for me. The beauty and imagery in the words helps me to open my heart to the true line of communication. It is true the Gods do like beauty and effort and so a well written prayer is in itself an offering and therefore a good thing but it is just a tool. When we pray it is important to enter the silences and listen be open and willing to wait. You will receive promptings and signs. You do know when they are listening and responding. I have come to understand that some of the Gods have a bit more patience than other and these are more willing to repeat the message in many ways until at last we do understand.
One common way of communication with the Gods is to use an oracle. I often use the tree Ogham and the Druid Animal Oracle to try and see what the Gods are saying to me. This takes practice and effort too, but it is worth taking the time to begin to learn the meanings of one of the many oracles out there. I have found for me that any oracle works best if it is included in ritual work or prayer time as in this way we are more in tune with the skills needed for effective communication.
I think it is also a good idea to talk about offerings. Many pagans make offerings to the Gods and think they know best what the Gods may like. I tend to think of them as rather like Cats bringing you a headless mouse and dumping it on your floor. The Cat thinks you want this and is very pleased to bring it to you. Yet you look and think oh no what the **** is that. Now as I have said it is not easy to communicate with the Gods but do keep trying and at least ask them what they may like as an offering you may be surprised at the answer, for example I was offering ale to the ancestors as I was taught and yet one day it occurred to me to ask what did they want and I got the strong impression of “I would love a cup of tea”. I offered it and it was accepted. Now I ask.
In summary communication is not easy. There are always going to be misunderstandings but keep going and keep trying and one day if you are lucky you will be speaking the same language.
